Public speaking and teaching

Speaking and teaching can be one of the more profitable venues for writers. In addition to earning money for addressing audiences, authors are typically allowed to sell their own books, CDs, tapes and videos at the back of the room.

Online classes provide many teaching opportunities as well. A wide variety of workshops and seminars ranges from adult education classes priced at $29 for an evening to professional seminars charging $500 and more for a weekend. For an online guide to classes and teaching venues on hundreds of subjects, see http://www.classearch.com/ and follow the links to become a learning provider. Also see http://www.shawguides.com for workshops around the U.S..

To find appropriate speaking gigs, list associations, clubs, trade organizations, trade shows, conventions, community events, corporations and businesses related to your topics. Contact the Public Relations Director for the organization to pitch yourself as a speaker.

Register yourself as an expert with speakers agencies at http://speakers.com/database/agentindex.asp and list yourself for free at http://www.speaking.com.

To help prepare yourself for speaking and presenting for money, consider joining Toastmasters. You can practice speaking before groups, get feedback from members and other speakers and enjoy meeting new people who might buy your ebook, http://www.toastmasters.org.

Put on your own seminars for profit. But be prepared to do lots of prep work to make your workshops successful. For a basic primer on how to earn money from teaching classes, see Make A Difference by Bob Walling. Bob co-founded Open U in Minneapolis and really knows how to help you get started teaching in the adult education field.

Also, read Speak and Grow Rich by Dottie Walters. Dottie's the guru of public speaking and her book is the step-by-step guide.
